Our dear Hugh was a man of great character, intelligence, wit, kindness, generosity and a beautiful passion for the preservation of open space. He led the way for the preservation project to protect Erdenheim Farm, help build the Whitemarsh Foundation, work with Natural Lands and serve on the Open Space Committee for Whitemarsh Township.
Obviously here, we are most grateful for Hugh and his wife Katie's desire to save The Highlands and they did so by creating the Highlands Historical Society back in 1975. They were always a sweet, truly funny, and dynamic duo whose shared passion for this estate, opened the doors and land for our entire community to enjoy. We can take some comfort with the thought that they are now reunited in a much better place.
Hugh was an incredible leader and mentor to many, perhaps to more people than he even realized. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to an amazing family.
We will miss his hearty laugh and having the opportunity to listen to endless stories about the early days when he and Katie got their elbows dirty, trying to clean up The Highlands. He's only been gone for a day and yet already sorely missed by all of us. He was a wonderful man and exemplar example of how to care for this magical place.
The Moulton Meadows are here for you to enjoy, as are the trails at Erdenheim Farm and we encourage you to explore and appreciate both preserved pieced of nature on our community.
It is most telling and fitting to end with a touching quote by Hugh -
'If we can't make the world safe for plants and animals, what hope is there for us?'
